Utes Take One of Three in San Diego

The Utes avoided the sweep on Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 win against the Aztecs. JoJo Sharrar got the game winning single up the middle in the 9th inning in a game the Utes desperately needed to win. "This was a big win for us", Sharrar said. "We needed to come out of here with a win and we did just that."
The Utes lost close bouts with the Aztecs on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, but with the win on Sunday kept their conference championship hopes alive. The Utes sit in 4th place just 2 games behind TCU and New Mexico for the lead.
The Utes will play a Tuesday game against Southern Utah and then will have a crucial weekend series against in-state rival BYU. BYU is in 6th place in conference and are looking to move up in the standings. The series will start on Thursday night down in Provo, followed by a game Friday and a game Saturday to wrap up the series.

Bats Silenced in Series Loss to UNLV

After taking care of business against Southern Utah on Tuesday, the Utes turned their attention to the Rebels who came into town playing well but being several games behind the Utes in the conference standings. The Utes however did not come to play at any level on the weekend, losing all 3 games against the Rebels and being pushed down to 3rd in the standings.
"There's not much you can say about our performance this weekend," CJ Cron said. "We did not do anything right all series and against a good team you can't do that and expect to win."
The Utes were held to just 3 runs on the entire weekend, forcing the pitching to be too fine in certain situations.
"It's always nice as a pitcher to have the offense put up a lot of runs for you," Rick Anton said. "This team has been able to do that up to this point of the season and I have no doubt that we will bounce back from this." The Utes will need to and fast.
The Utes will need to forget about this weekend as they travel to San Diego State on Thursday to face a team that is clean off a sweep of Air Force.
"San Diego State is always a tough competitor and we need to shake this series off and get back to work on winning the conference," Tyler Yagi said.

Utes Finish Air Force with Weekend Sweep

The Utah Utes completed a 3-game sweep of in conference rival Air Force to move into first place in the conference standings.
"It feels good," Jordan Whatcott said. "It's a place this team hasn't been in recent years." In fact, never have the Utes been in first place in the Mountain West Conference until now.
"Looking back at the fall one of our main goals was to win the conference outright," Josh Reed said.
The Utes look forward to a Tuesday bout with in-state foe Southern Utah and then have another big test this weekend against the UNLV Rebels.
