Utes Take One of Three in San Diego
The Utes avoided the sweep on Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 win against the Aztecs. JoJo Sharrar got the game winning single up the middle in the 9th inning in a game the Utes desperately needed to win. "This was a big win for us", Sharrar said. "We needed to come out of here with a win and we did just that."
The Utes lost close bouts with the Aztecs on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, but with the win on Sunday kept their conference championship hopes alive. The Utes sit in 4th place just 2 games behind TCU and New Mexico for the lead.
The Utes will play a Tuesday game against Southern Utah and then will have a crucial weekend series against in-state rival BYU. BYU is in 6th place in conference and are looking to move up in the standings. The series will start on Thursday night down in Provo, followed by a game Friday and a game Saturday to wrap up the series.

Bats Silenced in Series Loss to UNLV
After taking care of business against Southern Utah on Tuesday, the Utes turned their attention to the Rebels who came into town playing well but being several games behind the Utes in the conference standings. The Utes however did not come to play at any level on the weekend, losing all 3 games against the Rebels and being pushed down to 3rd in the standings.
"There's not much you can say about our performance this weekend," CJ Cron said. "We did not do anything right all series and against a good team you can't do that and expect to win."
The Utes were held to just 3 runs on the entire weekend, forcing the pitching to be too fine in certain situations.
"It's always nice as a pitcher to have the offense put up a lot of runs for you," Rick Anton said. "This team has been able to do that up to this point of the season and I have no doubt that we will bounce back from this." The Utes will need to and fast.
The Utes will need to forget about this weekend as they travel to San Diego State on Thursday to face a team that is clean off a sweep of Air Force.
"San Diego State is always a tough competitor and we need to shake this series off and get back to work on winning the conference," Tyler Yagi said.

Utes Finish Air Force with Weekend Sweep
The Utah Utes completed a 3-game sweep of in conference rival Air Force to move into first place in the conference standings.
"It feels good," Jordan Whatcott said. "It's a place this team hasn't been in recent years." In fact, never have the Utes been in first place in the Mountain West Conference until now.
"Looking back at the fall one of our main goals was to win the conference outright," Josh Reed said.
The Utes look forward to a Tuesday bout with in-state foe Southern Utah and then have another big test this weekend against the UNLV Rebels.

Utes Shift Focus to Air Force
The Utah Utes lost tonight's game against Utah Valley 10-8 in another slugfest with the crosstown rivals. Crucial errors and pitching mistakes gave UVU the upper hand against the Utes, but Utah is now focused on bigger goals. It has been a goal all year to win the Mountain West Conference championship. So far the Utes are tied for first place with New Mexico, and are ready to battle the Falcons of Air Force this Thursday, Friday and Saturday to jump into sole position of first place in the conference. Thursdays game is at 6PM at Spring Mobile Ballpark and we hope to have a big crowd on hand to watch. Go Utes!

Utes Sweep Northern Colorado
In the third game of the series the Utes needed to put their rally caps on and score 7 in the 7th inning to come from behind and beat the Bears on Sunday. Bryn Card threw 6 good innings and Stephen Streich picked up the win throwing 2.2 innings in relief. The entire Utah lineup clicked on offense and was lead by Nik Gumeson and JoJo Sharrar homeruns. The Utes are now 12-9 on the season and hold a 3 game winning streak. Next up for Utah is another tough test against in-state rival UVU on Tuesday night at 6pm. Come support the Utes!

Tough Double Header for the Utes
Today was a rough one for the Utes, as they dropped both games of a double header.
The first game the Utes simply didn't come to play, as the lost 4-1 to the Portland Pilots. Jordan Whatcott threw well enough to win, but the bats were silient all morning. Unable to string timeley hits together makes it difficult to win. Brock Duke came in relief of Whatcott to finish out the game.
The second game was a different story for the Utes. Facing the host Oregon State Beavers, the Utes were aggressive on offense and Bryn Card through a phenominal game against his former team. The offense was lead by key hit and runs and RBI singles by CJ Cron and Tyler Yagi. Nick Kuroczko walked three times and drove in two runs with a single to right in the 7th to make the score 4-1. Card threw into the 7th giving only a few hits and 2 runs. The bulpen however was not able to hold the lead late. Andrew Wilding was first to relieve Card and finished off the 7th without any damage. Zach Adams came into the game the start the 8th and overpowered the Beavers. In the 9th inning however, Adams lost some of his control and was faced with the bases loaded and two outs. With a left handed hitter coming to the plate, Stephen Streich was brought into the game. On a 1-1 count, Streich threw a changeup that was hooked down the right field line and into the corner, scoring all three base runners giving the Beavers a 5-4 victory.
The Utes will need to bounce back quickly as they have to face the Portland Pilots tomrorow, Sunday, at 10:30 AM to round out the weekend.

Utes Bounce Back with Solid Win
Sundays game showed what the Utah baseball team is capable of doing. Timely hits and great pitching lead to a victory over the previously undefeated Washington State Cougars, 4-1. Rick Anton, in his third career start for the Utes, pitched wonderfully all day. Mixing his upper 80's fastball with a devastating curve, Anton only allowed 4 hits in 7 innings while striking out 9.
Hits in crucial situations also spelled victory for the Utes. C.J. Cron, coming off a quad injury, smashed a homerun to right field and hit a bullet to center to score the 4th and final run. Devin Walker also contributed with the bat, hammering his 3rd homerun of the season.
Zach Adams came in relief of Anton and pitched two scoreless innings while striking out 2. It is Adams second save of the season, and kept the Utes above .500 with an overall record of 6-5. The Utes will have a few days off before heading up to Oregon State this Thursday. Scheduled game time is set for 3PM on Friday afternoon.

Time To Bounce Back
The Utes will need to forget about today after dropping two to the Washington State Cougars in Pullman Washington. Utah struggled to score and make plays in the first game, losing 5-1. Jordan Whatcott threw into the fifth inning before being replaced by Tyler Andersen with a score of 4-0. Andersen kept the Cougars off balance for the rest of the game, but the Utes offense could not get anything going until the 9th. Austin Shackelford drove in the only run of the game with a pinch hit single to right field.
Game two started off well with Tyler Yagi scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Andrew Wilding took the mound but good at bats and timely hits forced him to leave in the 5th trailing 4-1 with a runner on second. Stephen Streich came in relief and pitched 2 innings giving up one additional run to the Cougars. The Utes then scored in the 7th by an RBI single into right field by Mark Moorman, but it was not enough as the Utes dropped game two 6-2. Blake Golding relieved Streich and held the Cougars scoreless for the final two innings.
The Utes will play a game Saturday and Sunday in hopes of splitting the series at two a piece.
